New Years at the movies.
Jan. 1st, 2016 10:31 pmFinally watched the new Star Wars. I liked it. It was derivative, but not too derivative. But definitely super echoey, which I am sure is what they were going for. I wish the next movie would aspire a bit higher, but I frankly doubt it will. I think the series franchise is looking to be more James Bond-like in giving the audience what they expect. Nothing wrong with that, and certain sections of the movie made me smile and feel like a kid again. There's something to be said for that, because I have really great memories of seeing the original three in the movie theater.
In contrast, during the rest of my exceptionally lazy day (which is what the first day of the year should be, in my opinion), we watched an Australian horror movie called The Babadook, which completely surprised me and made me squirm all the way through. It's a totally different style and genre, but I have a feeling that's the movie I'm going to be thinking about and remembering more clearly a few months from now.
