“You don’t get older, you get better” — Shirley Bassey
This is my birthday weekend, so since I had the time (ten-year work anniversary and all), I took Friday and Monday off, figuring after the past few months, it might be nice to try and unwind a bit.
Friday started well, as I had been at a conference the night before, and stayed overnight in a Seaport hotel room that was small, but lovely and really comfortable, with a fantastic view of Boston. My enjoyment was a bit dampened by the knowledge that Kyra had another seizure about fifteen minutes after I left for the conference, and it was off-and-on the night before as to whether she might have another one. I couldn't go to the reception afterwards, I was a bit too agitated.
But a second seizure had not taken place, and being away overnight was a bit soothing, so I took the train back home at 930. The train was practically empty, and that was another soothing thing, not having to share space with anyone. When I arrived home, however, Corb had to go work at the shop, and my day off turned into watching Kyra, who will not lay down any more but looks around for any chance for food and pees in inappropriate places , or just stands completely still and looks into space, along with dealing with work stuff that had to be taken care of that day. It wasn't exactly a relaxing PTO day.
Saturday was had a vet appointment, and the vet, who had terrible bedside manner, said that despite our fears, Kyra appeared fine, given the circumstances, and not to be concerned unless she was having multiple seizures or her quality of life was completely awful--meaning, she was just laying like a lump, doing nothing.
Is that how far we want to get it? I asked myself. I'm not sure I have an answer yet. I don't think Corb does, either.
That afternoon, after a brief period of feeling sorry for myself because of what was going on and it being not exactly the birthday weekend I would have wanted, Corb and I went out for lunch and talked things over, which did a lot to revive my spirits. That night, we went to a Friendsgiving party at our friend Taylor's house, and that was really fun, with a lot of old Corb work stories, as usual, and much Doctor Who talk (everyone loves the new episodes). In fact, went home to watch the second installment that night.
Today? Lunch with my parents to celebrate my birthday. Mom is doing a lot better since Thanksgiving and was able to join, and we ate at our favorite restaurant in Wareham.
After that, off to see Corb's mom, who came down with COVID during Thanksgiving and we also haven't seen for a while. Having been a while since we have seen her, we had a bit of catching up to do, and she has also had a bit of tea to share.
"Have you heard about the drama with Scott and Tina?" she asked. "A few days ago, a letter was delivered to their house from someone who wanted the whole family to know that Scott wasn't the family man they think he is! This person says he has had affairs with several women. They also sent a copy of the letter to Tina's mother!"
"Scott denies he has had any affair at all, and I believe him. He thinks the letter came from the husband of an old friend of Tina." Then she launches into a story about an exchange that took place 12 years ago. Tina and having marital problems, along with Tina's friend, Cheryl. Scott tries commiserate with her and she takes that as an advance. Suggests they should get together, leaves a suggestive note on his car with lipstick marks. 12 years later, Cheryl dies and her grief-stricken husband finds out, and tries to retaliate by sending these scandalous letters.
It all sounds like something out of Desperate Housewives.
Well, she might believe him, but Corb and I?
"It seems really strange to send a letter like that 12 years later," said Corb. "And technology guys don't usually send long six page anonymous letters like that. even if they are becoming unhinged."
"I agree. The only way that he would is if he found something incriminating as he was cleaning out his wife's belongings. A message or a journal entry. But even that seems kind of dramatic. I think it's more likely something more recent than that."
"I agree. And remember how flirtatious Scott was being with that friend of Jackie's."
"Just what I was thinking!" Now THAT seems more likely, in our minds.
"Or, it could be that person who wrote to me about Alec," said Corb. "Making good on their threat." A few months ago, someone had sent by Instagram embarrassing videos of Corb's nephew and demanded money to keep them hidden. Corb had blocked the person and didn't say anything to anyone. The last thing the person had said was "Do you know who I am?" No, no we did not.
"Ooh! Ooh! The tea gets even darker," I grinned. The truth is, we probably never will know the truth. But who would believe there could be so much drama within one family?
I tell you...the things that go down in Suburbia! It makes our little gay lives seems absolutely tame in comparison.
