I've been very quiet about it, this year, which is quite a change for me. And I've noticed that most of my friends on LJ have been pretty silent about the whole thing, too.

However, that doesn't mean that I haven't been interested in the mid-term elections, and wondering whether finally...FINALLY...this whole national Republican nightmare may finally be coming to an end. Maybe I haven't been saying anything, because I'm afraid to jinx it, and it certainly could go one way or another, so another part of me doesn't want to get my hopes up, either.

But it somehow seems difficult to believe that, after wave upon wave of scandal and corruption, after a totally messed-up approach to the war on terror, after all the torture and invasion of privacy charges, and now, after the Mark Foley scandal, sitting there atop the whole mess like a giant marischino cherry...after all that, it's hard not to imagine that SOMETHING's got to happen.

It's been funny, watching all the Republican pundits and officials do all that they can these past few days to try and deflect blame for the scandal on the Democrats, on the gays within their own party, on the media. They're trying anything dog and pony show they can think of to deflect blame away from their own failed leadership, but I don't really think it's working.

In the interest of fairness, I have another suggested scapegoat: perhaps Foley shouldn't check himself into alcohol rehab, but buy a hearing aid. Maybe he's actually deaf, and misunderstood Bush's "No Child Left Behind" program...
