tedwordsWell, it looks as though that silly constitutional amendment was rejected by the Senate--and it didn't even secure the majority that it was predicted to receive.
I don't know. I'm confused: is a marriage between a man and a woman really endangered, like the Crescent Dune Scarab Beetle? I see men and women getting married all the time. I'm invited to weddings all over the place. So where's the threat here?
According to Bush, changing the definition of marriage undermines the family structure. Hmmm...interesting. See, I have some experience here. Josie and I changed our definitions a few years ago. Did it undermine our family structure? Well, it was painful for a while, and I can't say that we haven't shed a few tears, but was our family structure undermined?
Not really. I still see a family. For the most part, a relatively happy family, too. None of my kids have turned to drugs or alcohol or prostitution. My oldest is still living in the family, and has a decent job. I'm still holding down my job, and Josie has hers. My kids see their parents every day, are well fed, and well loved.
If anything, despite our change of definition, we're probably just as much a family now as we ever were, and also, probably better off mentally than a majority of the heterosexual marriages that end up in divorce.
Bottom line is, to steal shamelessly from the conservatives: gay marriage doesn't kill families. People do!
And I'm not talking gay people, either. I'm talking those people who seem to forget that this is a civilized world, and it is possible to maintain and retain a family despite changing circumstances, with just a bit of peace, love, and understanding.
