"So Corb," I asked, as we were doing our nightly 'three turns around the neighborhood' ritual the other evening, "When are we going to be taking down the holiday decorations?"
"Oh, I know," he replied, looking around at the houses surrounding Green Victoria that were now clearly devoid of decoration, or even worse, had moved on to Valentine's day. "At least, the wreaths. They've been getting kind of battered by all the wind we've been having."
"Don't you usually take them down after little Christmas? When is that?"
"Last week," he replied, sheepishly. "But there is another Christmas holiday that is the very last point you should keep your decorations up. Takes place in February. It's a Portuguese custom. I am thinking of going with that."
I get it. It takes so long for him to put up the decorations around Green Victoria (with seven decorated trees) that it makes sense to want to make it last as long as you can. Plus, there year he's busy working on the Chandelier Shack outside, and also, before we pack everything away we want to reorganize our basement. So yeah, there are really compelling practical reasons to want to make the holidays last, as long as we can.
