"The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new." — Socrates

Friday night martini post:

Well, another Friday is here, and my mini-vacation is coming to a close. It was really more of a staycation, with only an overnight in VT and much of the rest of the week focused on creating the vision for Corb's upcoming third location. Still, I really enjoyed the time and even had Wednesday and Friday to myself, while Corb worked away from home. I deliberately did not think of my day job at all.

I kind of used both days to test a few things. Wednesday I made sure I was totally regimented, and blocked out a schedule for most of the day. In contrast, today I took a more casual approach, and just went with the flow.

Which day did I get more satisfaction from? The structured day, without a doubt. I felt like I accomplished more. The day felt a bit more fulfilling. So there's a formula for you, gang. Structure equals satisfaction.

Tonight we are dining with our dear friend Mama Sue, who I am pumping for information about what one should think about as you contemplate moving into the next chapter of your life. Of course, her and Tom have yet to give up their business, so maybe she isn't exactly the right person I need to speak to. Ah, who am I kidding? Mama Sue is always the right person to speak to.

Come to think of it, I believe Sue was my age now when I first met her years ago, while I was directing Kiss Me Kate. Time does fly. But good friends always stand the test of time.

So tonight, I raise a chocolate coconut martini and toast to longevity, to structure, to satisfaction, and to rediscovering and reinventing your purpose in life. Oh, and to purple llamas, an essential prop for most plays.

Postscript now that the long weekend is complete:

I have very fond memories of my week off, test driving my retirement. We also celebrated Corb's mom's 80th birthday. In fact, I remember it more than I do he week that followed, which is a good sign. But much of that was spent preparing for Corb's latest location, which is opening up in Norfolk. It is a lot of work opening up a third location, but this is very much what my life will be like, shortly.

Here's to new locations. In life, in work, in everything. It's good to mix things up.
