tedwords At Peter's suggestion, I sent the following letter to his friend John about the apartment. We'll see what happens. But if it doesn't, I'll look elsewhere...

I hope that you don't mind me writing directly to you, but I wanted to avoid placing Peter in the difficult position of apartment broker!
I believe that Peter has mentioned that I might be a good candidate to look after your apartment while you're away, and I certainly would be interested in meeting to discuss that, because I am in a position where I am seeking a place to live, and this does sound like an ideal arrangement. By way of introduction, I am clean, neat, reasonably levelheaded and responsible...however, I do laugh a bit too loudly during movies, even when I'm watching one late at night.
As I said, while I do have a keen interest, I want to see whether it would make sense to meet. Piotr indicated that you are seeking $X rent, which does not include utilities (electric and gas).
Just to give you a bit of background, I am currently in the process of going through an amicable separation with my wife of ten years. Not to go Oprah on you or anything, but clearly, budgetary considerations are extremely important to me, since I still intend to support her and the kids. So, I wanted to know if you had any thought as to how much these utilities would add to the overall cost. Unfortunately, my shattered battered wallet will only stretch so far, so I want to plan for as much as I can...and although this is an attractive price in light of the location (and from the description), if the utils are as high as I fear, this would probably be out of my price range.
Any additional information would be greatly appreciated!
